How To Start Command Prompt In A Specific Folder/ Location

Sometimes, we require to start CMD in specific location or folder. Usually people open Command Prompt from Start menu and then go to desired location using “cd (change directory)” command. But this is a lengthy process and nobody wants to do this every time.

In Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 you can easily open Command Prompt in a specific location directly from Menu bar in Windows Explorer. But in Windows 7 and earlier versions, you can’t find that easy option to open Command Prompt in a specific folder. This tutorial shows, “how to open or start command prompt (CMD) window in specific folder in Windows 10 as well as in Windows 7.”

How to Open CMD in Specific folder in Windows 8/8.1 or 10

Step 1

In Windows 10 go to the folder where you want to open Command Prompt.

Step 2

Click on File in menu bar, click Open command prompt and you can select either to Open Command Prompt or Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

Step 3

Command Prompt will open in that folder, you can check the path shown in the CMD window.

How to Open CMD in Specific folder in Windows 7 or XP

Step 1

In Windows 7 or earlier, if you right-click in blank space, you will see context menu. This context menu has various options. We will use this right-click context menu to open Command Prompt in that folder.

Press & hold Shift-Key and right-click anywhere on blank space. Right-click context menu will pop-up but this time you will see “Open Command window here” option in this context menu. Click on “Open command window here” to open Command Prompt in that folder.

Step 2

Command Prompt window will open in that folder where you right-clicked. You can check the path in command window.

Now you see, it’s quite easy to open command window in any folder. Just Right-click with Shift-Key and you will see option to open command window there. This Shift-Key trick works for all versions of Windows while Explorer menu option is available in Windows 8 or Windows 10 only. Enjoy, Have fun!
