Microsoft has released a major upgrade on Nov 12, 2015. This new release (version 1511, OS build 10586) provides many fixes and new features. Like “Skype” was discontinued in Windows 10 July release. In this release Skype is integrated again, and apart from that windows title bar color is back. The best thing in this release is that you can activate Windows 10 using Windows 7 or 8/8.1 product key. There are lot more new things in this release, let’s take a look at them in details-

Skype Is Back

Skype application was discontinued in Windows 10 initial release. But it is integrated back in the latest release i.e. version 1511, build 10586. This update will add three applications to your Windows 10 – Skype Video Calling app, Text messaging app and Voice calling app(Phone app).

Windows 10 also includes Sway, an Office-style app. You can use this app to create and share interactive reports, presentations, personal stories, and more.

Cortana Is Improved

Microsoft has made a major change to Cortana, the personal digital assistant for Windows 10 users. Previously, you required to have a Microsoft account to activate Cortana but now you don’t need Microsoft account. You can configure Cortana without having a Microsoft account.

Cortana can also understand inked notes, track movies and other ticketed events, warn you when you miss a phone call, and synchronize your messaging and call history. Cortana can also shutdown itself when it knows you’re not using your computer.

Optional Windows 10 Login Background

Now, you can turn off Windows 10 login screen background image. You don’t need to do any registry hack to change or disable login screen background. Just go to Settings >> Personalization > Lock screen and disable the “Show Windows background picture on the sign-in screen” option if you want to use a plain-color background. You still have to use hacks if you want a custom background image, however.

Title Bar Colors

Now, you can also change windows title bar color. You can choose a color that will appear on Start Menu, Task Bar and Title Bar. If you didn’t like previous White colored title bar, then it’s going to be a big relief for you.

Go to Settings >> Personalization > Colors and enable the “Show color on Start, taskbar, action center, and title bar” option. The color you choose here will be shown on your title bars.

Track Your Lost PC

Windows 10 can also track your Lost Laptop or Windows 10 device. You don’t have to use third party tracking softwares to track your lost Windows device. Windows 10 includes inbuilt device tracking application. You can find Find My Device option in Settings >> Update & Security. Windows 10 will periodically upload your device’s location using GPS so that you can track your lost device using it’s last location. You can check it’s last location at http://account.microsoft.com/devices

Activate Windows 10 Using Windows 7, 8/8.1 Product Keys

Previously, You could only upgrade from Windows 7, 8/8.1 to get Windows 10. Because the product keys for Windows 7, 8/8.1 wouldn’t work for Windows 10. If you perform a clean install on Windows 7, 8/8.1 PC, you gonna need Windows 10 Product key.

But now, you can activate your Windows 10 using Windows 7, 8/8.1 product key. This is a big relief to the guys performing clean install of Windows 10.

Change Location For Default Apps

You can change default installation directory for new apps from Store. Previously, you were forced to install the Windows Store apps to “C” Drive. This was a big headache, because this will fill your C drive quickly. But now you can save your apps to another disk drive so that your C drive will still have enough space.

You can change default save locations by going to Settings >> System >> Storage.

Automatic Default Printer Management

Now, Windows 10 can automatically manage your default printer. Whenever you use a new printer to print a page, Windows will automatically set it to your default printer. You can also turn this feature off in Settings.

Just go to Settings >> Devices >> Printers & scanners and disable “Let Windows manage my default printer”

Touch Improvements

In this new release, some of the Tablet Mode features work like in Windows 8. In Task View, you can now drag an application’s thumbnail to the bottom of the screen to close it.

You can change this setting in Settings >> System >> Multitasking. Enable “When I resize a snapped window, simultaneously resize any adjacent snapped window” feature. The people who like Windows 8/8.1 will sure like this feature.

Start Menu App Advertisements

Now, you can see occasional suggestions for apps in start menu. Microsoft want Windows 10 users to install Windows Store apps, that’s why they have included this feature. But you don’t need to worry about that, you can always turn this feature off in Settings.

Go to Settings > Personalization > Start and disable the “Occasionally show suggestions in Start” option to stop seeing ads in Start menu.

New Features Added To Microsoft Edge Browser

Microsoft has added some new features to Microsoft Edge web browser. Support is added for new HTML5, CSS3, and ECMAScript features in it. Two best features are-

Tab Preview

You can preview the content of any tab by just hovering the mouse over it. The content of a tab will be displayed in small window.

Browser Sync

Now, you can sync all your favorites, bookmarks and reading list over all your Windows 10 devices. Just login to all devices using same Microsoft Account.

Better Look For Start Menu & Context Menu

The Start Menu and Context menus are more Polished in this new upgrade. You can now have more than 512 apps installed on your PC. The Start menu now supports up to 2048 Tiles” or apps. Windows 10 apps and tiles can now have Jumplists, this way you can show more tiles on the Start menu. Context menu styles have been improved and look more reliable on the Start menu and on the desktop.

These are only a few of the improvements that Microsoft has made to Widows 10, you may find others. You can expect more in upcoming months. Enjoy, the new upgrade! If you have not disabled Windows 10 Updates manually, you will be upgraded to this new version 1511, build 10586 automatically.
