How To Make Your Computer A Time Server / NTP Server Without Any Software

A Time Server or NTP(Network Time Protocol) server is a server that is used to synchronize the time across devices. Like in Windows, your time automatically get synchronized by Microsoft’s time server (time.windows.com). You can also make your own PC a time server or NTP server and can synchronize the time of all devices in your local(LAN) network with your PC. This tutorial shows you “how to turn your PC / Computer into NTP or Time Server without any software.” You don’t need any special software for doing this, though you can find many softwares on the internet for making your PC an NTP server. You can turn your PC/Computer into NTP server by just performing a small registry hack.

How To Make Your Computer A Time Server / NTP Server Without Any Software?

Step 1

We need to make some changes to Windows Time Service. For that we need to stop Windows Time service in Windows services panel. You can follow this path to go to Windows Services Panel.

Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services

Alternatively, you can type services.msc in RUN and press ENTER.

This will open Windows Services, look for ‘Windows Time‘ and right click on it & select STOP to stop this service. If it is already stopped, you can move to next step.

Step 2

Now, open Registry Editor. Press “Windows Key + R” to launch RUN utility, type “regedit” and press Enter.

Go to following registry key-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > W32Time > Parameters

If you don’t see ‘LocalNTP’ DWORD on the right side, you can create it. Right-click >> New >> DWORD and name it LocalNTP (case sensitive).

Double-click it to modify it’s value and set it to “1” (Hexadecimal).

Step 3

Do not close Registry Editor yet, go to following key-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > W32Time > TimeProviders > NtpServer

On the right side, you will find a DWORD named as Enabled, set it’s value to “1” (Hexadecimal).

Step 4

Now, go to following key in Registry Editor-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > W32Time > Config

And set the value of AnnounceFlags DWORD to “5” (Hexadecimal).

Step 5

Go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services again and Start Windows Time  service and set Startup type to Automatic.

Now, you can use your computer as NTP server and you can synchronize the time of other computers in your LAN/Local network.

Step 6

Let’s see how to synchronize the time of any other PC using this newly created NTP Server. For this you should know the IP address of your PC. You can check your IP in Network Settings or in Command prompt using “ipconfig” command. For example, IP address of your newly created NTP server or your PC is 10.0.2.15, this is just an example, it may be different for you.

Now, go to the system whose time you want to synchronize, open Date and time settings. Click on Internet Time tab and click on Change Settings… and enter the IP address of your NTP server (10.0.2.15 in my case) in the box and click on Update Now to synchronize time. It may give you error on first attempt try again and your time will be synchronized. Now, you can click OK and exit settings.

Now, you have successfully turned your computer into a NTP or Time Server without any software. You can synchronize time of every device on your network using this NTP server. You can also synchronize time of any remote device using this NTP server by forwarding NTP port in your router. NTP port is “123” by default. Enjoy, Have fun!
