Every health-conscious person should monitor his heart rate variability (HRV). For the people who don’t know, HRV is a measure of the time variation between two heartbeats. Measuring HRV offers better insight into the body’s autonomic nervous system (ANS). It also plays an important role in tracking stress levels in individuals. Using Apple Watch you can easily measure HRV data with better accuracy and convenience.
If you are not aware of this health and fitness feature in Apple Watch, now is the right time. In this tutorial, we are going to explain, how to measure and monitor heart rate variability using Apple Watch and iPhone.
Monitor your Heart Rate Variability on Apple Watch and iPhone
Before we dive into step-by-step process, let’s know about how it all works on watchOS and iOS.
Apple Watch uses the standard deviation of beat-to-beat measurements. It is captured by the heart rate sensor to calculate HRV. Currently, watchOS allows users to measure hrv data using the stock Breathe app on Apple Watch. While for checking the HRV data, users have to use the Health app for iPhone. Please note, this feature requires watchOS 4 and iOS 11 or later. Lets’ get started with the process.
Note: watchOS automatically mutes some notification while you use the Breathe app. Keep in mind if you make too much movement or answer a call during the breathing session, watchOS won’t give you any credits.

The app’s animation will get bigger and smaller to denote inhale and exhale process respectively. The Apple watch will also tap on your wrist. Make sure to slowly inhale when animation gets bigger and exhale when animation shrinks. App will monitor your HRV using your heartbeat during this session.
Keep breathing until the session ends and the smartwatch taps you twice and also plays chimes. When the session ends, the app will compliment you “Well Done”. You will also see details of your current breathing session. Besides that, you will also have option to start he session again.
After the breathing session is over, you can use your paired iPhone to check the HRV data. The monitored HRV data will be available in Health app on your pared iPhone.
