How to Change or Remove Profile Picture in Windows 10

It is quite easy to change your profile picture in Windows 10. You can easily select your favorite profile picture in Account settings. The select profile picture will then be shown on login screen, Start menu and Account settings page. However, once you have set your profile picture in Windows 10, it is not easy to completely remove it or reset to default because Windows 10 itself doesn’t allow you to do so. Luckily there are workarounds for resetting your Windows 10 profile picture to default one.

How to change profile picture in Windows 10?

You can easily change your Windows 10 profile picture in account settings. Follow these steps to see how to change your profile picture in Windows 10:

Step 1

First, open Settings and click on Accounts to open Accounts settings in Windows 10 where you can manage your accounts.

In account Settings, you will see account details including your profile picture, small description etc.

Step 2

To change default profile picture of Windows 10 to your desired one, scroll down a bit and click on Browse for one under Create your picture.

Now browse and select your desired picture. And this picture will be set as your Windows 10 profile picture.

You can see that profile picture has been changed and it will reflect in Account Settings, Start menu and Logon screen of Windows 10.

How to reset user profile picture to Default in Windows 10?

Windows 10 itself doesn’t allow resetting profile picture to the default one. However, you can reset it to default using a workaround. Resetting Windows 10 profile picture to default one is far more complicated task than just changing it. You have to make changes at several locations to reset or remove your Windows 10 profile pic. Follow these steps:

Step 1

Go to Account settings in Windows 10. Scroll down a bit and select Browse for one under Create your picture.

In browse window, go to following path:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures

Here you will find default profile pictures for Windows 10. Select the one named as user and click on Choose picture.

Default profile picture will be selected as your profile picture. You can see that in Account Settings.

Step 2

As you can see your previous profile picture is also showing in Accounts Settings page.

To remove profile picture history, you have to delete cached profile pictures from your Windows 10 PC. Go to following path:

%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures

Here you can see all pictures that you set as your profile pictures.

Delete all of them to clear the cache.

Now, your Windows 10 profile picture has been reset to default. You can verify the same in Accounts Settings page.

How to remove user profile picture in Windows 10?

Besides changing and resetting user profile picture to default one in Windows 10, you can also remove user profile picture completely. To remove profile picture in Windows 10 completely, follow these steps:

Step 1

Go to the location where all default profile pictures are stored and delete them all. Default profile picture location is at following path:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures

Rather than deleting all pictures, you can move them to another folder. It will help you if you wish to restore default pictures again.

One more thing we need to do is to delete cached account images from Public Account Pictures folder. Go to following path:

C:\Users\Public\AccountPictures

You will see a folder with name of your user Account SID. Delete this folder to clear Account pictures cache. You will need to take ownership of this folder before deleting it.

Step 2

Make sure you also delete cached profile pictures from AppData folder also if not done already.

%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures

After doing this you may need to restart your computer. Go to Account Settings page to verify removed profile picture.

How to Set/Change/Remove User Account Picture on Windows 10

You can easily change, reset to default or even remove user profile picture in Windows 10.
