How to Sync Gmail Contacts to iPhone in iOS

With the release of iOS 14, Apple has opened its closed iOS environment a bit. Now, you can change the default browser, default mailing app, set custom charging animation, etc. What’s more surprising? You can even sync your Gmail or Google account contacts to your iPhone. Besides that, you can also set Gmail as the default account in iOS 14 and newer.

All of this is quite simple. Once set up, all your Gmail contacts will sync to your iPhone. Plus next time you save a contact on your iPhone, it will automatically get saved to your Google account. All you need to have is iOS 14 or newer and the latest Gmail app on your iPhone.

A) Sync Contacts from Gmail to iPhone on iOS 14 and iOS 15

We have divided this tutorial into two parts. In the first part, we will show you how to sync your Gmail contacts to your iPhone running iOS 14 or newer. And in the second part, we will set Gmail as your default Contact app.

So, let’s get started with syncing your Gmail contacts to your iPhone. Please note that we have used iOS 15 screenshots in this tutorial, but the process is the same for iOS 14 too.

Step 3: Open Mail Settings on your iPhone

First of all, launch the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down a bit. Here, tap on the Mail option to see further settings.

Step 2: Go to Accounts to Add a Gmail Account

Here, you will see various Mail app settings. So, tap on Accounts to view connected accounts.

After that, you will see the list of connected mail accounts. Here, tap on Add Account to add your Gmail account and sync contacts to your iPhone (iOS 14 and iOS 15).

Step 3: Log in to your Gmail Account on your iPhone

Now, tap on Google and then select the Continue option from the pop-up menu. After that, you will be redirected to Google’s login page.

Here, log in with your Google/Gmail account by entering your Gmail ID and password. Please note that, if you have enabled Two Factor Authentication on your Google account, you may also have to approve your login via OTP or Google app.

Step 4: Enable Contact Sync from Gmail to iPhone on iOS 14 or newer

Now that you have signed in to your Gmail account, you can turn on contacts sync from Gmail. So, go back to Settings > Mail > Account and select Gmail.

After that, turn on the toggle for Contacts to allow contact sync from Gmail to iPhone on iOS 14 and iOS 15. Please note that if you are running iOS 14, you also have to tap on Save in the top-right corner.

That’s it. Now, your Gmail contacts will start syncing with your iOS device. However, it may take some time depending on the number of contacts in your Gmail account.

B) Set Gmail as Default Account in iPhone on iOS 14 and newer

After syncing your contacts from Gmail to your iPhone, let’s change the default account to Gmail. After that, all the contacts you add to your iOS device will automatically be saved to your Gmail account by default.

This process is also very simple just like the previous one. Just follow these steps.

Step 1: Open Contacts Settings on iPhone

Again, go to the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 14 or newer. After that, tap on the Contacts option to see more settings.

Step 2: Change the Default Account to Gmail

In Contacts settings, tap on the Default Account option at the very bottom. After that, select the Gmail option to set it as the default account for Contacts.

You are done here. Going forward, Gmail will be your default account on your iPhone.


NOTE: In case you want to revert the changes, you can easily change the Default account back to iCloud in Settings > Contacts > Default Account. Besides that, you can also delete your Gmail account from your iPhone. Go to Settings > Mail >  Accounts > Gmail. Here, tap on Delete Account and confirm.

So, now you can easily sync your Gmail contacts to your iPhone and set Gmail as Default Account in iOS 14, iOS 15, or newer. After that, all your Google contacts will show up on your iPhone. Even better, your saved contacts will sync to your Google account automatically. And all of this is easily reversible if you don’t like it.
