How to Display Warning Message on Windows Logon

Displaying a warning message on Windows logon is a good way to warn unauthorized users. While you can also do it for fun, most of the organizations display warning message on their computers for compliance purpose.

You can use Group Policy if you wish to show logon warning message in domain computers. But if you are doing it on your local computer only, you can simply use Registry Editor.

Show Warning Message on Logon

In this tutorial, we are going to show you, how to display a warning message on Windows logon. We will use Registry Editor to achieve the desired results. So, just follow these steps to show a warning message on logon screen.

WARNING: BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHILE PLAYING WITH REGISTRY EDITOR, MESSING WITH IT IN WRONG WAY MAY HARM YOUR COMPUTER BADLY.

Step 1: Open Registry Editor

First of all, open Registry Editor (Press Windows Button + R, type regedit and then press Enter). You may see User Account Control prompt, click Yes to continue.

After you click Yes on UAC prompt, Registry Editor window will open.

Step 2: Go to Winlogon Key in Registry Editor

After you have successfully opened the Registry Editor, browse to the following key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Make sure to select Winlogon key from the left in Registry Editor as shown below.

Step 3: Set Caption for Logon Warning Message

Now, right-click on LegalNoticeCaption and select Modify. This will act as the heading for the warning message.

Type the caption or heading for the warning message you wish to display on logon. After that click OK to save the caption.

Step 4: Set Warning Message to Show on Logon

Next, right-click on LegalNoticeText and select Modify to set the warning message which will display on Windows logon.

Now, type your warning message in the Value data box and click OK. You can set any message that you want to display on logon.

Step 5: Restart Your Computer to See the Warning Message

We are done here. So, now you can close the Registry Editor. After that, restart your computer to make the changes effective.

After the restart, you will see warning message on logon. This logon warning with display on every logon. You can simply sign-out and sign-in again to see this warning message.

Step 6: Remove Logon Warning Message

If you wish to remove the warning message from Windows logon, open the Registry Editor again. Again, follow the same path in Registry Editor and clear the Value data of LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText registry keys. After that, restart your computer and logon warning message will be removed.
