How to Change Login Screen Background in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Microsoft has made things quite simple with Windows 10 and Windows 11. Especially to change the login screen background picture in Windows 10 and Windows 11. In earlier versions of Windows, it was quite complicated. But with the latest versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11, you can easily do it without any trouble.

The best part is that you can choose several available options for login screen backgrounds in Windows 10 and 11. You can choose from Windows Spotlight, Picture, Slide Show, and Solid Color. You can even set your custom image as the login screen background.

Change Login Screen Background Picture in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Since the look and feel of Windows 10 is different from Windows 11, so, we will show you the steps for both. Let’s start with the process.

Step 1: Enable Login Screen Picture in Personalization Settings

To display the background picture on the login or sign-in screen in Windows 10 and 11, we need to enable the setting first. So, go to Personalization settings and enable it.

Windows 10:

Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. After that scroll down and enable the toggle for “Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen“.

Windows 11:

Similarly, in Windows 11, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Here, scroll down a bit and enable “Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen“.

Step 2: Use Windows Spotlight Images as Sign-in Screen Background

Now, after enabling the login screen background, we can set Windows Spotlight images as the sign-in screen background. Follow these steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows 10:

Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen again. Here select “Windows Spotlight” from the Background drop-down. It will display Windows Spotlight images on the lock screen and login screen in your Windows 10.

After that lock your Windows 10 PC by pressing the Windows + L shortcut key combination. You will see the Windows Spotlight image on both the lock screen and login screen background.

Windows 11:

Follow the same path in Windows 11 as well. So, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen in Windows 11. Here, select “Windows Spotlight” from Personalize your lock screen drop-down.

After that, sign out or lock your Windows 11 PC to see the sign-in screen picture.

Step 3: Set a Custom Picture as Login Screen Background in Windows 10 and 11

We have seen how to set Windows Spotlight images as the sign-in screen background. But, Windows spotlight images are downloaded automatically and we have no control over them. So, now we will use an image or picture of our choice as the login screen background in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Let’s start with Windows 10.

Windows 10:

Just like the previous step, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. But this time, select “Picture” as the lock screen background. After that, you can select from available pictures or click the Browse button to change the login screen background to your desired picture.

You can lock your Windows 10 PC or log out to see the selected picture on the sign-in screen.

Windows 11:

Windows 11 settings are quite similar to Windows 10 settings. So, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen again and select “Picture” from Personalize your lock screen drop-down. Now, you can click Browse Photos to browse for your favorite picture or select from available ones.

Now, sign out or lock your PC again to view the selected picture on the Windows 11 login screen.

NOTE: Similarly, you can set Screen Saver as the login screen background in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The steps are quite the same. You just need to select “Screen saver” from the lock screen drop-down. So, we are not showing steps for that here.


Step 4: Set Solid Color as Sign-in Screen Background

Just like Windows Spotlight and Picture, you can also set a solid color as the login screen background picture. But to do that, you will have to disable the Lock screen background. Just follow these steps.

Windows 10:

Now, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen again. But this time, disable the toggle for “Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen“.

After that, go to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Here, select your favorite accent color for Windows 10. The same color will show up as a sign-in screen background.

Now, go to the lock screen again by locking your PC or signing out. Here, you will see the selected accent color as the login screen background.

Windows 11:

Windows 11 doesn’t support setting accent color as a sign-in screen background yet. So, you can set a solid color as a sign-in screen background in Windows 11. However, if you disable the lock screen picture from Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, it will turn the login screen background to black.

Now, go to the sign-in screen by locking or signing out your Windows 11 PC. Here, you can see the BLACK background on the login screen.

Customize Sign-in Screen Background in Windows 10 and Windows 11
